Charlotte Region
UNC Charlotte is one of 11 universities throughout the UNC system to house the NC NTSP in the Cato College of Education. In the Charlotte region, 375 beginning teachers in 100 schools are being supported by a team of NC NTSP instructional support coaches. The schools are located in seven districts (Anson, Cabarrus, Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Cleveland, Iredell-Statesville, Montgomery, Rowan Salisbury), public charters (Apprentice Academy, Bradford Prep, Iredell Charter Academy, Langtree Charter, Lincoln Charter, Unity Classical, Union Academy, Union Day, Veritas), and UNC Charlotte’s lab school Niner University Elementary.
The Charlotte regional team, led by Director Dr. Misty Hathcock, are full-time employees of the university. Their sole job is to support beginning teachers in the region through the three core services of Institute, professional development, and individualized coaching. The coach/teacher ratio is 1/30 and coaches visit teachers face-to-face/virtually a minimum of once per week. The coaching focus at UNC Charlotte is “in-the-moment” and cognitive coaching with an equity focus in the areas of planning, instruction, and assessment. All NC NTSP instructional support coaches at UNC Charlotte have a current/valid NC teaching license in multiple content areas and many have their terminal degrees. In addition, coaches have received training from Elena Aguilar, Jim Knight, and Paul Bambrick-Santoyo for instructional coaching. Coaches are trained in virtual coaching in partnership with BetterLesson and EdConnective and have received training in cognitive coaching, Crucial Conversations, No Nonsense Nurturing, PEAK, and Colors.
